Environmental Risks Push up Cardiovascular Deaths: EU Agency
Environmental factors cause 18% of cardiovascular deaths in the EU; enforcing existing policies could save millions of lives and reduce health costs by €282 billion, the EEA says.
- On November 3, 2025 the European Environment Agency published a briefing warning millions of lives could be saved each year if Europe strengthens environmental protections and urged governments to enforce existing clean air and chemical safety directives.
 - Environmental factors such as air pollution, extreme temperatures, toxic chemical exposure and transportation noise drive cardiovascular harm, and the European Environment Agency said deaths could be prevented by raising awareness, reducing noise and strengthening chemical regulations.
 - The data show cardiovascular disease caused more than 1.7 million deaths in 2022, with over 6 million new cases annually costing nearly 282 billion euros, including 130,000 deaths from fine particulate matter and 115,000 from extreme temperatures.
 - Key measures include enforcing the Ambient Air Quality Directive and the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan , with Commission targets estimating over 55 per cent reduction in premature deaths by 2030.
 - Spain's Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares , Spain and the REBOOT trial found women on beta-blockers after heart attacks had a 2.7 per cent higher mortality risk in 8,505 patients across Spain and Italy, evidence the EEA said should reshape prescribing.
