One Home in Nogha Heights Confirmed Lost to Fort Simpson Wildfire

Fire crews have slowed the blaze in residential areas, but firefighters still must extinguish smouldering hotspots before residents can return.

  • The Fort Simpson wildfire, designated FS016-26, has grown to more than 23,000 hectares and remains out of control. Chief Kele Antoine confirmed on Monday that one home was lost in the Nogha Heights area.
  • More than 100 firefighters have spent days patrolling residential subdivisions to protect property. Following the evacuation order issued on June 28, about 1,300 residents remain displaced in Yellowknife, nearly 700 kilometres east of Fort Simpson.
  • Fire information officer Forrest Tower described the efforts as a "continual fight" against smoldering hotspots burning underground. Tower noted that active firefighting will be required for several days before residents can safely return.
  • Canadian North Airlines suspended all flights until July 18, while Antoine urged the final 12 individuals remaining in the village to leave. He thanked them for making the "responsible decision to leave."
  • Residents gather in Yellowknife for drum dances to honor firefighters and maintain hope, yet officials warn there is no set timeline for return as the wildfire remains a challenge for weeks.
