One dead and hundreds ill in UK salmonella outbreak

The FDA said 98 illnesses and 26 hospitalizations are linked to the eggs, which were first pulled from shelves in July.

  • The UK Health Security Agency confirmed 207 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis across the UK between August 11 last year and August 1, with one death recorded and 199 cases in England.
  • Health officials identified the outbreak strain as phylogenetically linked within 25 single nucleotide polymorphisms to a 2025 outbreak also involving imported eggs, prompting investigation.
  • Of those affected, 38 per cent required hospital treatment, with ages ranging from babies to 90; public health investigations linked 24 cases to five food businesses.
  • Jacquelyn McCormick, head of incidents at the Food Standards Agency, advised that thoroughly cooked and hygienically handled eggs remain safe, while the agency provides food safety guidance to linked businesses.
  • Officials are liaising with environmental health teams to control spread, emphasizing that Salmonella is rarely transmitted person-to-person and recommending thorough handwashing after handling eggshells or packaging.
