Alberta Man, 29, Charged with Arson in B.C. Hospital Fire in 2020
Police say a nearly six-year investigation led to an arson charge against a 29-year-old Alberta man in a hospital fire.
Nearly six years after a fire at Burnaby Hospital, the British Columbia Prosecution Service approved a charge of "arson, disregard for human life" against 29-year-old Yu Yun Wang on September 8, 2026.
Burnaby RCMP responded to the hospital fire on November 15, 2020, later determining the incident was a deliberate act of arson and subsequently sharing photos of a person of interest to gather tips.
Working with the Edmonton Police Service, Alberta RCMP, and Strathcona County RCMP, investigators advanced the case after identifying a suspect who had moved to Alberta in summer 2023.
Wang is currently in custody in Alberta on unrelated charges, while Staff-Sgt. Gary Yeung, Acting Investigative Services Officer, said "the reach of the RCMP and Canadian policing in general was on display."
Chief Superintendent Bill Parmar, Officer in Charge, described the investigation as a testament to officer dedication, noting the incident impacted the local hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
