Herrera was hit by a departure of Major Juan de Jesús Gutiérrez when he had managed to reach the square with Colonel Gabriel Reyes, one of the soldiers took his spear so that Gutierrez would hurt him with it but Reyes wounded the major in the hand and Herrera was able to flee.The confrontation continued until the night, when what was left of Herrera's army managed to withdraw to Nemocón.
