On May 6, 1945, Festung Breslau Surrendered. History From 81 Years Ago in Archival Photos.

On April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his underground bunker in Berlin. Despite this, in early May, Breslau (a fortress since August 1944) continued to defend itself. It wasn't until May 4 that the first surrender talks began, and early on the morning of May 6, the fanatical Gauleiter Karl Hanke, loyal to Hitler until the end, fled Breslau by plane. The formal surrender was signed in the city, four days after Berlin.
