Czech lawmakers decided on Thursday, after a tense debate, that Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Speaker of the House Tomio Okamura will not be stripped of their immunity. The lower house of parliament thus rejected an official request from the judiciary to extradite them for criminal prosecution.
The ruling coalition confirmed that its alliance is solid, at least for now. Its MPs refused to extradite Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomi Okamura (SPD) for criminal prosecution, so both will now avoid the courts thanks to parliamentary immunity. In a speech before the vote, Babiš made a move against the judiciary, claiming that criminal prosecution can be ordered in the Czech Republic.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš spoke mainly about himself in his speech to MPs on Thursday, explaining why he did not want to be extradited for criminal prosecution in the Stork's Nest case. At one point, however, he mentioned a woman who is more connected to him than she would probably like. And who may pay more for the case than Babiš himself.
