Oliver Tree's mum pays tribute following his death
Christine Begin Nickell shared a Facebook tribute to her son, the 32-year-old singer killed alongside five others in the mid-air collision.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, American singer Oliver Tree Nickell died after two helicopters collided in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killing six people total. One helicopter exploded, igniting a fire that spread through 20 vehicles at a nearby electric car dealership.
Brazilian music producer Victor Wao narrowly avoided the fatal collision after deciding against boarding the helicopter due to his fear of flying. DJ Lucas Frota arranged a car to transport Wao instead, a last-minute choice that ultimately saved his life.
Christine Begin Nickell, Tree's mother, paid tribute on Thursday, June 18, writing on Facebook, "Our dear son Oliver, you made this world a better place." Partner Fiona Chernavskaya also mourned publicly, denouncing online gossip about their relationship.
During a concert at Rogers Stadium in Toronto on Tuesday, June 16, Post Malone honored the late musician, telling the audience, "We lost a beautiful man named Oliver Tree." He celebrated Tree as a gentleman who inspired the world with his art and soul.
The Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center is investigating the crash, which occurred while Tree's group was in Brazil for music-related commitments during his world tour. The cause of the mid-air collision remains under investigation.
