OL Cole Hutson returns to Texas after NFL tryouts
Hutson went undrafted, tried out with two NFL teams and won a court ruling that gave him another season at Texas.
On Friday, the University of Texas announced offensive lineman Cole Hutson is rejoining the Longhorns for the 2026 season. The 6-foot-5, 308-pound veteran secured an additional year of eligibility following a successful legal challenge against the NCAA.
Last week, a federal District Court judge in Denver granted Hutson the right to play a fifth year of college. He sought the additional season under the NCAA's "5-for-5 plan" after going undrafted in April.
Hutson brings significant experience, having appeared in 48 games with 23 starts at multiple positions during his four seasons in Austin. "Cole is thrilled to be playing with his beloved Longhorn teammates," his agency said.
Rejoining the team at this late stage, Hutson will likely begin the year as a depth piece while competing for a starting spot. He joins a unit that added multiple transfer portal linemen this offseason.
Texas kicks off the 2026 campaign on Sept. 5 at home against Texas State. The Longhorns prioritized offensive line changes this offseason, and Hutson's return strengthens a group that needed improvement.
