Oil and Gas Prices Spike Amid U.S. War on Iran
Brent crude oil prices surged to $109 a barrel amid U.S.-Israel-Iran tensions, pushing California gas prices up 86 cents per gallon last week, AAA reported.
- On Monday, Brent crude oil spiked to $109 before settling to $85, pushing pump prices higher in California and nationwide, with Mill Valley gas rising from $4.06 last Wednesday to $4.92.
- California's high gas taxes, costly gasoline blend, limited refinery capacity and higher transport costs amplified local price hikes, while federal tax credits eliminated last year shaped longer-term demand for electric vehicles .
- Across states, pumps showed prices like $3.59 per gallon in Winter Park, Florida, and some drivers report $100 fills when gas is over $3, with Arco customer Banson Chavez saying, 'Eighty dollars every two days to fill up my tank... $43 full,' and Fisher noting 'seven extra dollars per fill-up.'
- The Trump administration said the spike will lead to steadier, lower prices, and President Donald Trump vowed ending the threat would lower costs for families, while a Quinnipiac poll found sharp partisan divides and widespread concern over rising fuel prices.
- With uncertainty looming, UC Berkeley's Severin Borenstein said 'I think it makes it quite clear that there's tremendous uncertainty about how this war is going to go, how long it's going to take and how it's going to resolve' and warned 'The problem is when those prices start to feed through to goods and services. And, at some point, they start to raise prices'.
