Iran and US Hit Tankers in Biggest Wave of Attacks on Shipping Since War Began
The United States said it destroyed five Iranian tankers after missile attacks on a U.S. Navy warship, as transit through the strait slowed to six ships.
- American Central Command destroyed five Iranian oil tankers overnight, releasing video of the ships ablaze before sinking in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting a Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the previous two days.
- The IRGC launched ballistic missiles at a base near Azraq in eastern Jordan on Wednesday. Jordan reported its air defences intercepted 18 of the 20 missiles, with two falling in unpopulated areas and no casualties.
- Maritime security reports indicate merchant ships sustained damage across the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, including a vessel off Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates. Preliminary data shows just six ships crossed the Strait with transponders active over the last 24 hours.
- Washington has adopted a new policy of attacking Iranian tankers in retaliation for fire threatening its Navy. "Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships, and for every time they do that or try to do that, they're going to lose tankers," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
- Iran has declared an off-limits zone around the Strait of Hormuz, threatening tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports. These tensions have largely choked off transit through the waterway, which previously carried global oil before the war began.
