US oil and gas air pollution is causing unequal health impacts: Study
The study reveals that 96% of health issues linked to oil and gas stem from fossil fuel combustion, disproportionately impacting marginalized ethnic groups in the US, researchers said.
- Researchers at University College London and the Stockholm Environment Institute found oil and gas air pollution causes 91,000 premature deaths annually in the United States, alongside 10,350 pre-term births and 216,000 new childhood asthma cases.
- The study shows the final end-use stage causes 96% of health incidents, with disparities traced to redlining affecting marginalized ethnic and racial groups.
- Researchers also traced 10,350 pre-term births, 216,000 new childhood asthma cases, 1,610 lifetime cancers, and early deaths in southern Canada and northern Mexico to US oil and gas pollution.
- Co-Author Dr. Ploy Achakulwisut urged accelerating the phase-out of oil and gas production and combustion to save lives, noting Black, Asian, Native American and Hispanic groups face the greatest exposure and health impacts.
- Published in Science Advances, the study is the first to quantify US oil and gas pollution impacts across all lifecycle stages and reveals 1,170 deaths in southern Canada and 440 in northern Mexico, highlighting international impacts.

Study finds major health burden from oil and gas pollution across the United States
Air pollution from oil and gas is causing 91,000 premature deaths and hundreds of thousands of health issues across the United States annually, with Black, Asian, Native American and Hispanic groups consistently the most affected, finds a major new study led by researchers at UCL and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
US oil and gas air pollution is causing unequal health impacts: Study
Air pollutants from U.S. oil and gas operations are causing 91,000 premature deaths and hundreds of thousands of health issues each year — with racial and ethnic minority populations bearing the biggest burden, a new study has found. The outdoor contaminants, which include fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone, take the…
