U.S. and Pakistan condemn Houthi Red Sea threats to shipping and Saudi Arabia
Pakistan said the threats endanger regional security and global trade, and it reserved the right to use force to protect maritime assets.
- On Monday, the Houthis declared "a maritime embargo against the criminal Saudi enemy, based on the equation of 'an eye for an eye', effective immediately," threatening to escalate regional conflict and disrupt global energy supplies beyond the Gulf.
- The Houthis cited an "unjust and oppressive siege" imposed on Yemen by the Saudis, following a missile attack last week that pierced a four-year truce after accusations of airport bombings.
- Pakistan unequivocally condemned the threats on Wednesday, warning that such actions "threaten regional security, undermine freedom of navigation, challenge the rules-based maritime order and jeopardise uninterrupted flow of global commerce."
- The announcement alone creates uncertainty for Saudi ports; a full closure of the Bab el-Mandeb strait could reduce global oil supply by 7%, compounding the 10% drop already caused by the Iran war.
- Whether the Houthis move "from threats to direct action remains the critical issue," said Mohammed Albasha, a Yemeni analyst and founder of Basha Report, as there is no clear answer regarding targeting of Saudi ports.
