OHSAA Sanctions Girls Flag Football as Varsity Sport with State Championship Starting in 2026
OHIO, JUL 17 – Ohio joins 16 states sanctioning girls flag football with 80 high schools participating, supported by NFL teams and linked to the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games.
- Last Thursday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association said it would sanction girls flag football as a varsity sport, with a state championship beginning in spring 2026.
- Earlier this year, programs expanded as girls flag football participation grew from 20 schools three years ago to 80 this year.
- A motion was passed to include girls flag football within the association, following the sport's integration into OHSAA’s framework through Region 18.
- Girls around Ohio can join school teams and compete for state championships, and Elizabeth Blackburn called it `This is an incredible day for the state of Ohio, the sport of football and most importantly the young women who have dreamed of this moment`.
- The inaugural OHSAA season will kick off in spring 2026 and flag football will be included as a new sport in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, positioning the sport for future growth.
