Former Ohio Attorney Convicted of Trying to Shoot Ex-Wife at Restaurant
Prosecutors said a voicemail and surveillance video showed premeditation, and a waiter tackled Exton before he could fire again.
- A jury convicted former Ohio prosecutor Matthew Exton of attempted murder on Sept. 4 following a 2025 incident at the Sabira restaurant in Toledo where he targeted his ex-wife, Kada Malone.
- On April 11, 2025, Exton spotted Malone dining at Sabira while he was at nearby Souk restaurant. He had previously left a voicemail referencing Johnny Cash's lyric, "Sooner or later God will cut you down," threatening her.
- Surveillance footage captured Exton pointing a weapon at Malone and pulling the trigger; the handgun's safety remained engaged, preventing it from firing. A waiter tackled Exton before he could attempt another shot, protecting Malone and her parents, Jeannie Malone and Charles Malone.
- Exton faces sentencing on Sept. 21, 2026, after screaming lyrics to "God's Gonna Cut You Down" during his courtroom outburst. Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates called the intervening patrons "heroes."
- The jury found Exton guilty of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, and firearm specifications on Sept. 4. Authorities noted he carried a loaded chamber and seven additional bullets in the magazine during the attack.
