Ohio GOP leaders differ on whether child marriage should be a 'debate'
About 26 women organized by Unchained At Last urged lawmakers to close a loophole that lets 17-year-olds marry adults.
On Wednesday, roughly 26 women wearing bridal gowns and chains gathered at the Ohio Statehouse to demand lawmakers pass Senate Bill 341, which would ban child marriage in the state.
Senate Bill 341 would set the minimum marriage age at 18 with no exceptions, yet the measure remains stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee despite receiving no public opposition.
More than 5,000 minors married in Ohio since 2000, with survivor Stephanie Lowry stating, "They have no rights as adults...we shouldn't be getting married under 18 when we have no legal rights."
State Sen. Bill DeMora criticized some Republicans for blocking the measure, while House Speaker Matt Huffman suggested the issue warrants further legislative debate.
Sen. Bill Blessing noted the bill likely won't receive a vote before summer recess, though Fraidy Reiss, founder of Unchained At Last, stated advocates will continue pushing for passage.
