Officials say out-of-control wildfire on Vancouver Island will cause more smoke
VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, AUG 9 – The Wesley Ridge wildfire grew less than 1% recently despite steep terrain and drought, with 294 households under evacuation orders, officials said.
- By Saturday, August 9, 2025, the wildfire located close to Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island, known as Wesley Ridge, had expanded to cover 5.9 square kilometres and remained uncontrolled.
- The fire started on July 31, 2025, and crews face steep terrain with limited water access due to persistent drought conditions, prompting use of helicopter water drops and opened logging roads.
- As of August 8, 353 addresses remained on evacuation alert and 294 households were under evacuation order, though some residents in Little Qualicum River Village may return by August 11.
- Fire officials said rising temperatures will increase smoke from the fire for weeks or months, but do not expect the blaze to impact Highway 4 linking Vancouver Island's western and eastern communities.
- The BC Wildfire Service will keep crews working on the fire for the foreseeable future as authorities continue monitoring conditions, warning residents that the situation can change quickly.
