Odisha Skeleton Episode: Patnaik Seeks 'Humane Banking Administration', Draws Sitharaman's Attention
Police said the man sought about 20,000 rupees from his sister’s account after bank staff required documents for a death claim.
- On Tuesday, Jeetu Munda brought the skeletal remains of his sister, Kalra Munda, to an Odisha Grameen Bank branch in Maliposi, Keonjhar, seeking to withdraw 20,000 rupees from her account.
- Munda, an illiterate tribal man, claimed bank staff insisted he bring the account holder to process the withdrawal despite informing them she had died on January 26.
- Patna Police Station IIC Kiran Prasad Sahu said, "The bank officials have failed to make him understand the procedure to withdraw money from the dead person's account." Indian Overseas Bank rejected allegations staff demanded the deceased's physical presence.
- Police officials intervened to assist Munda with the withdrawal process, and the skeletal remains of Kalra Munda were reburied under police supervision. The bank stated it will settle the claim upon submission of a valid death certificate.
- The incident in Odisha has drawn attention to challenges accessing banking services for illiterate individuals in rural areas, as local authorities continue coordinating with the bank to secure necessary documentation for final settlement.
