Odisha: Several feared dead after massive stone quarry explosion in Dhenkanal; rescue ops underway
- Saturday night around 8.30 pm, a blast at a quarry near Gopalpur village in Motanga police station limits, Dhenkanal district buried at least four workers, with two bodies recovered so far.
- The blast occurred during drilling and stone extraction work, causing a large rockfall that buried labourers, while the exact number trapped or killed and identity of deceased remain unconfirmed.
- Multiple rescue teams, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force , local fire service teams, heavy machinery and a dog squad were deployed as Dhenkanal Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil and Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar coordinated rescue efforts.
- District officials said their immediate priority is to recover bodies, while Naveen Patnaik, Leader of Opposition, called for a thorough investigation, as rescue operations continue.
- Locals alleged the quarry's operations were suspended in September and the lease expired in December, while a probe will check if the agency operating the quarry had valid permissions and followed safety norms.
