Centre Pushes Fresh Talks to Resolve Mahanadi Water Dispute
Odisha says the states could reach a negotiated settlement within three months after productive talks led by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil.
- On Thursday, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed confidence that the long-standing Mahanadi river water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh will be resolved within three months following talks in New Delhi.
- No formal water-sharing agreement exists for the 851-km Mahanadi, which flows from Chhattisgarh through Odisha. Downstream scarcity intensified after Chhattisgarh reportedly constructed over 500 anicuts and 30 barrages.
- Odisha approached the Supreme Court in 2018, leading to formation of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal. In 2024, with the Bharatiya Janata Party in power in both states, leaders informed the tribunal of their intent to seek amicable resolution.
- Officials from the Central Water Commission and both states will hold follow-up meetings to maintain momentum over the next three months. Majhi stated the parties aim to finalize settlement by Diwali.
- The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal warned in April that it would impose its own formula if states failed to submit concrete proposals, adding pressure to these negotiations after years of failed correspondence.
