BALASORE DISTRICT, ODISHA, JUL 17 – Odisha Crime Branch questioned the sole eyewitness who suffered burns trying to save the student amid a statewide bandh demanding justice for alleged sexual harassment victims.
- On July 12, 2025, Sukanya, a 20-year-old B.Ed student, set herself on fire on the campus of Fakir Mohan College located in Balasore, Odisha.
- She took this drastic step allegedly due to sexual harassment by her HoD and lack of effective response from the institution despite her official complaints.
- Sukanya suffered 95% burn injuries and died on the night of July 14 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
- The Balasore Police arrested the suspended HoD Samira Kumar Sahoo and principal Dillip Ghose, charging them with abetment to suicide and sexual harassment, while the Crime Branch took over the investigation.
