UN Oceans Conference Calls for Global Action on Plastic Pollution
- Nearly 100 countries endorsed the Nice Wake-Up Call at the June 10 UN Ocean Conference in Nice, demanding a legally binding plastics treaty.
- This collective action follows five rapid negotiating sessions since December 2022, with a draft treaty text of 22 pages outlining 32 or 33 articles.
- The treaty aims to regulate plastics throughout their full life cycle and includes calls to cut production, ban toxic additives, and fund frontline communities.
- Experts warned that plastic damages cost $281 trillion between 2016 and 2040, plastic waste harms ecosystems, and blue whales ingest 10 million microplastic pieces daily.
- With the next negotiation scheduled for August 5–14 in Geneva, global leaders face a critical choice to finalize the treaty or let the plastic crisis worsen unchecked.
