Nigeria: 61 Nigerian Officials Linked to $271 Million US Property Holdings
The report says 230 of 284 properties were bought without apparent financing, raising money-laundering concerns and highlighting gaps in U.S. anti-corruption enforcement.
- On Tuesday, a joint investigation by the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa and the Anti-Corruption Data Collective revealed 61 current and former Nigerian officials are linked to 284 U.S. properties worth nearly $271 million.
- Substantial real estate was acquired while officials held public office, "at precisely the moment when their access to state resources and influence was greatest," according to the report, with many properties lacking clear financing sources.
- Prominent figures named include former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki and former senator Orji Uzor Kalu, with Kalu holding investments exceeding $20 million and Dasuki purchasing a horse farm for nearly $1 million in 2002.
- PPLAAF Executive Director Jimmy Kande warned these findings expose critical gaps in how stolen wealth crosses borders, urging Nigerian and American authorities to collaborate on returning the assets to the public.
- While Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala stated Nigeria supports the anti-corruption fight, the Trump administration reportedly declined to enforce the Corporate Transparency Act, complicating efforts to identify true property owners and recover assets.
