Oakland County Officials Report Legionella Bacteria at 2 More Buildings

Oakland County is installing filters and flushing water systems after detecting Legionella in two more buildings, with no linked illness cases reported, officials said.

  • On Jan. 28, 2026, Oakland County announced Legionella was detected at the North Oakland Health Center and the Resource and Crisis Center, confirming new positives on the county campus.
  • Testing began after a custodial employee at the Oakland County Sheriff's administration building was hospitalized in November, prompting checks following prior positives at the sheriff's office and courthouse tower.
  • Two of six samples at North Oakland Health Center and two of five at Resource and Crisis Center collected Jan. 19 tested positive in specified restrooms and fixtures.
  • As an immediate measure, Oakland County Facilities Management is installing 0.2-micron filters, flushing systems, scheduling follow-up testing, and alerting employees and visitors to NOHC and RCC, with risk described as low, the county said.
  • Tests show the incoming water supply was negative, indicating Legionella grew in building plumbing systems, and routine sampling is expanding with Oakland County Jail testing that began Jan. 27, 2026.
