OA “Exceptional” in AP Program

(Oldenburg, IN) – Oldenburg Academy students continue to earn exceptional scores in the College Board’s Advanced Placement® (AP) program. Through this program, students undertake college-level coursework followed by a rigorous exam to determine whether they have mastered course content. Qualifying exam scores allow students to earn credit at colleges and universities across the country. This May, OA sophomores, juniors, and seniors who were enrolled in various AP courses took 179 exams across 12 different subjects. The school’s robust participation attests to both the student body’s willingness to challenge themselves and an academic environment that values intellectual growth. Among this year’s notable accomplishments was the performance of students in the four AP courses taught by Helen Yane, who has been a member of OA’s faculty for 10 years. Every student in Ms. Yane’s AP Environmental Science, AP U.S. History, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition classes earned a passing score on their exam. Moreover, in each of these subjects, OA scores were significantly higher than global and Indiana averages. Students scored 48% above the state average in AP Environmental Science, nearly 31% above in AP U.S. History, 21% above in AP English Language, and more than 30% above in AP English Literature. OA’s success extended beyond Yane’s classes. One hundred percent of students in AP Drawing earned passing scores. Scores in AP Biology as well as AP 2-D Art and Design surpassed both state and national averages. AP Chemistry students performed on par with the Indiana state average, reflecting strong preparation in one of the program’s most difficult science courses. Oldenburg Academy also offers AP Psychology, AP Spanish, AP Precalculus, and AP Calculus, which consistently prepare students for the rigor of college courses. “I am continually impressed by our students’ willingness to wrestle with such advanced coursework,” said Annette Hunger, President of Oldenburg Academy. “Both the level of participation and the results achieved speak to the culture of excellence and dedication that defines an Oldenburg Academy education. We are especially proud of Helen and the remarkable success of her students.” “When I learned that all of my AP courses had a 100% pass rate, I was thrilled,” Yane said. “I cannot give our students enough credit. It’s the students who take on challenging material and work diligently to master the difficult content and strengthen their analytical skills. It was their thoughtful questions, their time and effort, and their willingness to study that made our classrooms so successful. “Of course, the strong foundation built by all of OA’s faculty is also critical to our students being such confident, capable learners,” Yane added. Principal Jill Hollins echoed the sentiment, acknowledging that OA’s AP achievements represent far more than success in individual classrooms. “While AP exam results are often seen as a reflection of the teachers leading those courses, the scores are the result of years of preparation,” Hollins said. “Students enroll in these courses because of the skills that have been developed before they enter an AP classroom, and those skills are the result of the outstanding instruction they receive from our dedicated freshman- and sophomore-level faculty and from the countless educators in our area’s elementary and middle schools.
