NYPD Drone Powers Take Flight at US Open
Commissioner Jessica Tisch said trained officers can act on their own under the Safer Skies Act as 1.2 million fans are expected.
On Friday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the NYPD now holds independent legal authority to neutralize unauthorized drones at the 146th Open, marking the first time a local agency possesses such power at a major event.
This capability stems from the Safer Skies Act, which granted municipal police agencies the power to electronically land drones in restricted airspace—authority previously reserved solely for the FBI.
With 1.2 million fans anticipated by The United States Tennis Association, the NYPD will deploy 24-hour security presence, including concrete perimeter barriers, light towers, and specialized counterterrorism units at Flushing Meadows.
Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner confirmed federal temporary flight restrictions remain in place; violators risk losing equipment and facing civil fines up to $75,000 or criminal fines up to $100,000.
Although Tisch noted no specific credible threats exist, the department is maintaining full security detail involving bomb squads and explosive-detection dogs throughout the three-week competition to protect attendees.
