- On Tuesday, Zohran Mamdani, mayor-elect, won New York City's mayoral race with more than one million votes and will take office on January 1, 2026.
- Amid steep housing costs, Mamdani proposed freezing rent, free bus service, childcare and city-owned supermarkets, striking a chord where a three-bedroom flat can cost $6,000 a month since October last year.
- The vote split showed Mamdani defeat former governor Andrew Cuomo, who received 41.6 and Sliwa seven percent, with many Republicans considering Sliwa's vote a waste.
- Online backlash followed Debra Messing resharing memes calling Mamdani an 'Actual Communist Jihadist,' with critics deeming her posts Islamophobic, as she wrote `A social worker cannot help someone who is stabbed in the subway` and `Our city is too massive, complex, and consequential to have someone 33 years old who has never held a job, and missed 80% of his votes as Councilman`.
- Mamdani's victory makes him New York City's first Muslim and Indian American mayor and youngest in over a century, with a 2023 bill on charities tied to Israeli settlements and criticism of Israel's war in Gaza.
