NYC Sanitation giving away iconic trash cans painted in Knicks colors following viral theft video
DSNY is giving away five commemorative blue-and-orange street bins after a viral theft video drew attention to the Knicks championship tribute.
On Friday, the New York City Department of Sanitation announced a giveaway of five Knicks-themed waste bins standing 28 inches tall and weighing about 30 pounds. The orange and blue litter baskets are identical to those currently on city streets.
The contest follows a viral video showing a fan stealing a commemorative metal can during the championship parade. Angie Baez was fired by JPMorgan and fined $75 for littering and an additional $100 for interfering with sanitation operations.
"Fouling up our sidewalks and stealing public property should always be out of bounds in New York City," DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson said. The agency emphasized there is no need to lift bins off the street.
Residents 18 and older can enter the online drawing by July 3 before 5 p.m., with winners selected at random. Entrants must type "Do Not Litter" to verify they are human.
These bins became symbols of the Knicks' first championship in 53 years, sparking demand for memorabilia. A kitchen wastebasket resembling the street bins sells for $168 through the local brand Only NY.
