Deadly Chinatown Crash Kills 2; Driver Arrested, Police Say

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK, JUL 20 – The stolen rental car was driven at high speed, killing two people including a bike safety advocate; passenger charged with weapon possession and unauthorized use, police said.

  • A blue Chevrolet Malibu, stolen rental car, exited the Manhattan Bridge at around 7:30 a.m. Saturday and rammed through a median at Bowery and Canal streets, police said.
  • Prior to the crash, Kennedy Lecraft rented the Malibu from Enterprise on June 29 and never returned it, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and Autumn Romero had been freed without bail after an April hit-and-run in Brooklyn.
  • As his family recalled, Kevin Scott Cruickshank had supported Transportation Alternatives for years and was remembered as a longtime safe streets advocate by his family.
  • In court, Kennedy Lecraft was arraigned Monday on charges including unauthorized use and criminal possession, with bail set at $150,000 cash or $300,000 bond.
  • Following the crash, Karlin Chan said `They got to put up Jersey barriers or some kind of a permanent barrier there to keep people safe` at Canal Street in Manhattan.
