New York Making 'Significant' Effort to Host Winter Olympics
Gov. Kathy Hochul says significant meetings are underway as New York pursues a joint bid that would pair city arenas with Lake Placid venues.
Gov. Kathy Hochul officially backed an effort to bring the Winter Olympics to New York, pairing New York City and Lake Placid. Speaking to The Athletic, she insisted there is "sincere" political ambition and "significant" meetings underway.
New York last hosted the Winter Olympics in 1980, remembered for the Miracle on Ice when the U.S. men's hockey team defeated the Soviet Union. The joint bid draws inspiration from Milan and Cortina's successful 2026 Games, located around 250 miles apart.
Proposed venues include Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center and UBS Arena for indoor ice events, with Big Air at Citi Field or Yankee Stadium. Assemblyman Robert Carroll said the Olympics could "accelerate long-overdue investment" in rail corridors between Penn Station, Albany and Saratoga Springs.
An exploratory committee will be launched to study a formal Olympic bid. Hochul called the process "complicated" but said the state is ready to pursue it, with New York City and Lake Placid separated by under 300 miles.
The next available hosting window is 2042, with France scheduled for 2030, Salt Lake City for 2034 and Switzerland in talks for 2038. Former Team USA hockey player David Leggio said hosting "would be awesome," marking the first time two cities jointly host the Winter Games.
