Nvidia's CEO says China is still finalising licence for H200 chip

China has approved initial imports of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips, but final licensing is pending amid U.S.-China trade controls affecting chip sales and tariffs.

  • On Wednesday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the H200 AI chip licence is still being finalised as the Chinese government decides and asked to 'wait patiently' at Taipei's Songshan airport.
  • After Washington cleared exports, Beijing paused H200 shipments earlier this month, aiming to balance chip demand with tech self-sufficiency through cautious approvals.
  • Reuters reported the first batch would go to ByteDance, Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings, covering more than 400,000 units while access for state-backed firms remains tightly controlled.
  • China authorised the first H200 imports and Nvidia said some approvals came with restrictive conditions while customers had not yet converted approvals into purchase orders.
  • Earlier export controls led to a large write-down, forcing a $5.5 billion charge and analysts warned of a $9 billion revenue hit, but Nvidia's $37.6 billion cash reserve supports its $170 billion fiscal 2026 revenue forecast.
