B.C. Nurses Allege Employer Threats and Intimidation Due to Job Action
The union says more than 1,400 reports of intimidation have surfaced as nurses press for safer workplaces and better retention.
- On Tuesday, the B.C. Nurses Union expanded its job action, launching picket lines at Vancouver General Hospital with additional sites at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre beginning Thursday.
- Union President Adriane Gear says the expansion follows more than 1,400 reports from members alleging health employers used intimidation, including threats of discipline and warnings that nurses could lose professional licenses for refusing non-nursing duties.
- Managers have threatened staff, saying, "If you don't clean a stretcher or if you don't pick up something or stock something — these sorts of extra duties — then we're going to report you to the College," Gear told Black Press Media on Tuesday.
- Attorney General Niki Sharma stated the government supports the right to strike, though members rejected a tentative contract last month by 67 per cent following a 98 per cent vote to authorize strike action.
- The union, representing about 60,000 nurses across British Columbia, maintains that essential services will continue while pursuing meaningful wage improvements, better workplace safety, and solutions to the ongoing nursing shortage.
