Nurse who claimed she was dying of cancer in pension scam struck off

Amanda Reid forged 16 medical letters and used £185,442.95 in pension payments after falsely claiming terminal leukaemia, the panel said.

  • Children's nurse Amanda Reid received a two-year prison sentence at Livingston Sheriff Court for defrauding the Scottish Pensions Authority of £185,442.95 by falsely claiming she was terminally ill.
  • To feign terminal leukaemia, Reid forged 16 medical documents using Spire Hospital Edinburgh branding, shaved her head daily, and used weight loss medication between April 13, 2021, and August 31, 2024.
  • While Reid claimed she suffered from Munchausen's syndrome and sought no financial gain, the tribunal noted she spent funds on a Dubai holiday and fraudulently acquired controlled drugs from the NHS.
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council struck Reid from its register after a panel chaired by John Millar found 'no evidence of insight or remorse' regarding her sustained, premeditated dishonesty.
  • A pre-sentence social work report remained 'unable to independently verify' her Munchausen's diagnosis, while the tribunal concluded Reid's dishonest conduct could pose future risks to patients in clinical settings.
