Number of UK young people not in work or education drops under 1 million
The Office for National Statistics said 13.0% of 16-24 year-olds were NEET, as youth unemployment stayed at its highest in more than a decade.
- On Thursday, official data showed the number of British young people classified as NEET fell to 981,000 in the April-to-June period, representing 13.0% of the age group, down from 13.5% previously.
- Despite the recent dip, the total remains 30,000 higher than a year ago as persistent challenges including mental health conditions and neurodevelopmental issues like ADHD fuel continued inactivity.
- Lancaster University's Work Foundation found firms have fewer vacancies due to AI and automation, while inaccessible recruitment and low confidence hinder many young job seekers.
- Work and Pensions Minister Pat McFadden said addressing youth inactivity is "a priority," announcing new work experience placements for the long-term unemployed.
