576 Indians Reported ₹100 Crore+ Income in AY 2025-26, up From 142 in 2021-22: Govt
The figure was up fourfold from 142 in AY 2021-22, and the minister said Indian tax law has no statutory definition of billionaire.
On Monday, the Ministry of Finance informed Parliament that 576 individuals reported a gross total income of Rs 100 crore or more in Assessment Year 2025-26, a 39% increase from the previous year.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary clarified that Indian income tax law lacks a statutory definition for "Billionaire," with high-income earners quadrupling from 142 in Assessment Year 2021-22.
According to the World Inequality Report 2026, India's inequality remains high, with the richest 10% holding around 65% of total wealth and the top 1% holding about 40% of total wealth.
