During the Covid pandemic, the North Korean regime executed a record number of citizens for watching foreign media, according to a report by the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG), a South Korean NGO. According to the TJWG, at least 153 people were executed or sentenced to death between January 2020 and the end of 2024, which is a significant increase compared to the 44 people in the five years prior to the pandemic.
