Plane in crash that killed Peltola husband was overloaded with moose meat: NTSB
NEAR ST. MARY'S, ALASKA, JUL 22 – The National Transportation Safety Board found pilot error and unapproved external loads led to loss of control, with the plane carrying 117 pounds over its certified weight limit.
- On September 12, 2023, Eugene 'Buzzy' Peltola Jr. crashed a Piper PA-18 Super Cub near St. Mary's, Alaska, while carrying moose meat alone.
- The crash resulted from Peltola flying the aircraft above its maximum weight and attaching unapproved moose antlers on the right wing, amid turbulent conditions.
- Peltola had transported hunters and equipment days earlier, the group killed a moose, and he made satellite-planned trips to ferry over 500 pounds of meat without weighing it by scale.
- The National Transportation Safety Board reported that excess weight, antlers causing drag and imbalance, and mechanical turbulence led to inadequate control and loss of airplane power.
- Peltola died within hours at a remote site unreachable by quick medical aid, and Mary Peltola later filed a lawsuit disputing sole blame on her husband.
