In political The Hague, even on the last day before the summer recess begins, chaos reigns over the asylum laws. NSC wants to prevent at all costs that people who offer illegal immigrants a cup of soup or show humanity are punishable. The coalition party is now working together with opposition party SGP - which did agree to criminalize illegal immigrants - to establish such exceptions.
The faction is struggling with making it a criminal offense to help illegal immigrants.
The SGP wants to postpone the vote on the asylum emergency measures law, so that advice can be urgently requested on the criminalization of illegality. The party is not reassured by a letter on this subject from Minister David van Weel (Asylum, VVD). In it, "the minister now seems to state without substantiation that all assistance is punishable", writes the SGP on X.
