N.S. court approves $18M class-action settlement in 2015 Air Canada crash landing

Air Canada will pay more than $15 million to eligible class members after the court-approved deal resolved claims from the 2015 Halifax crash landing.

  • The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia approved an $18,075,000 class-action settlement on Monday, resolving claims against Air Canada, Nav Canada, and the Halifax International Airport Authority.
  • On March 29, 2015, Air Canada Flight 624 struck power lines during a severe snowstorm, landing about 200 metres short of the runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and injuring 25 of the 133 passengers and five crew.
  • According to case documents, Air Canada will pay more than $15 million of the total settlement, with CFM Lawyers LLP, Wagners, and MacGillivray Injury and Insurance Law distributing compensation based on individual claim valuations.
  • Air Canada spokesperson Sean Davidson said the company is "satisfied the matter has been resolved" through the agreement, which concludes the litigation without the defendants formally admitting fault.
  • Legal challenges continue for Canada's largest airline, as this settlement follows a separate lawsuit authorized by a Quebec court in January; Montreal firm Slater Vecchio LLP brought that pending case involving flight delay compensation allegations.
