- On Monday, the National Petroleum Council released a report urging Congress to authorize a National Cooperative Subsurface Assessment Program to centralize fragmented geological data and secure domestic supply chains.
- Energy Secretary Chris Wright commissioned the study, which contends that geological datasets are currently siloed across agencies and states, threatening resources providing more than 80% of U.S. energy needs.
- Developed by roughly 80 experts, the report recommends reviving the U.S. Bureau of Mines and incentivizing geologic hydrogen exploration to transform subterranean data into a digital economic resource.
