Nova Scotia Hacker Convicted of Fraudulent Impersonation Handed Conditional Discharge
Judge Alonzo Wright gave Samual Shaji probation and 50 hours of community service after the hacked post led to a provincial employee’s firing.
A Halifax provincial court judge granted Samual Shaji a conditional discharge after he was convicted of hacking into Nargis DeMolitor's social media account and posting an antisemitic message that led to her firing from the provincial government.
Hired to manage DeMolitor's accounts between January and March 2023, Shaji accessed the account in October 2023 after passwords had been updated, posting volatile content regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
In an April victim impact statement, DeMolitor told the court the post 'assaulted and stripped away the dignity, reputation and legacy' she built over decades, destroying her career and threatening her safety.
During a June 8 sentencing hearing, Judge Alonzo Wright ordered Shaji to complete 50 hours of community service and serve one year of probation, noting the act was 'out of character'.
Following the incident, DeMolitor filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit against the Nova Scotia government, though the judge noted she has moved on in her political aspirations.
