'Nothing Could Compare': B.C. Speed Climber Breaks 5-Second Barrier
Ethan Flynn-Pitcher clocked 4.996 seconds in training, and 34 men have broken the five-second barrier in competition, coach Libor Hroza said.
- On Thursday, Aug. 13, 25-year-old Ethan Flynn-Pitcher became the first Canadian to break the 5-second speed-climbing barrier, recording 4.996 seconds at The Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich.
- Flynn-Pitcher moved to Greater Victoria in 2022 to train under coach Libor Hroza, a former world champion from Czechia, abandoning his plans to become an emergency medical technician.
- Competitors race up a standardized 15-metre wall in speed climbing. Hroza noted that "only 34 men have broken the five-second barrier in competition," a mark increasingly required for podium contenders.
- Now, Flynn-Pitcher heads to the World Climbing Pan American Championships in Curitiba, Brazil, from Aug. 22 to 23 to attempt making the record official in competition.
- With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in his sights, Flynn-Pitcher is prioritizing the next qualifying season. "Next year for Olympic qualifiers, its just all gas, no brakes," he said.
