Northern Ontario Wildfire Forces Local First Nation to Prepare for Evacuation
Provincial fire crews say the blaze has tripled in size since Wednesday evening and reached 3,200 hectares, prompting road closures and evacuations.
On Wednesday, Mattagami First Nation Chief Jennifer Constant ordered mandatory evacuations for 200 residents as the out-of-control Timmins 9 wildfire spread south of Timmins, Ontario.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources reported the blaze expanded from 1,100 hectares Wednesday to 3,200 hectares by Thursday, prompting closure of a section of Highway 144 near the fire.
Linda Thibodeau, co-owner of the Green Wilderness Lodge, evacuated 27 people including family and customers on Thursday after officials ordered them to leave the property.
The 300 residents of Gogama are now on high alert as the fire approaches, with fire chief Bernie Souliere warning the predicted northerly wind will send the blaze "basically in our direction."
Souliere noted the community will learn on Friday whether evacuation is required, while Thibodeau recalled being forced to flee a similarly designated wildfire at the same location in 2012.
