Northern Lights Visible in UK Again Tonight as Rare Spectacle Dazzles Skies
Scientists said solar activity reached 600nT on Saturday, making the aurora visible across the UK, including unusually far south.
- On Friday and Saturday, the Aurora Borealis illuminated skies across the UK, extending as far south as Devon, Hampshire, and Kent—a rare occurrence for southern regions.
- Powerful solar eruptions known as coronal mass ejections from the Sun released charged particles that interacted with Earth's magnetic field and atmospheric gases, producing the vivid display.
- Geomagnetic activity reached 600 nanoteslas on Saturday evening, a rare intensity that allowed visibility across the entire UK; typically 200nT limits sightings to northern regions.
- Viewers should look northwards away from streetlights and use mobile phone cameras to reveal colours, as human rod cells in low-light conditions perceive limited colour in the Northern Lights.
- Krista Hammond, a manager at the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre, noted solar activity varies over an 11-year cycle, adding "we can expect to see an increase in the frequency" of aurora events.
