Northeast US digs out from brutal snowstorm that disrupted flights and canceled school
The bomb cyclone dumped over 3 feet of snow in Rhode Island, canceled more than 5,600 flights, and caused widespread power outages across the Northeast, officials said.
- On Monday, a major, record-breaking snow storm struck the US East Coast, causing over 5,675 flight cancellations mostly at New York, New Jersey and Boston airports, FlightAware reported.
- Warnings stretched from North Carolina to northern Maine, with hurricane-force gusts of 83 mph recorded in Nantucket, according to the National Weather Service meteorologists.
- Poweroutage.us reported more than 600,000 outages on the east coast, including nearly 300,000 in Massachusetts and 85% in Barnstable County.
- Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey ordered non-essential driving bans as New York City halted traffic for over 8 million residents, and the Boston Globe suspended printing for the first time in its 150-year history.
- By Tuesday, roads were beginning to reopen and some power was restored, but the National Weather Service is tracking another storm that could bring more snow later this week.
