Northbound I-5 Reopens Ahead of Schedule Near Bellingham
Crews removed about 7,000 cubic yards of debris and anchored 96 steel dowels before reopening the highway, WSDOT said.
- Both lanes of Northbound I-5 south of Bellingham reopened Wednesday, April 15, 2026, ending a 27-day closure caused by a landslide between mileposts 248 and 249.
- Following heavy rains, a 100-foot-tall slope collapsed onto the highway around 9:30 p.m. March 19, spilling Boulders as large as buses across the Interstate.
- To stabilize the slope, Crews drilled 2,065 linear feet of holes and anchored 96 steel dowels 15 to 25 feet deep, removing about 7,000 cubic yards of debris.
- Throughout the project, Geotechnical engineers monitored the slope for stability while Drivers were detoured to Highway 9, Highway 11, and local roads during the closure.
- One day ahead of schedule, the Washington State Department of Transportation reopened the route after final inspections confirmed the slope was stable and safe for traffic.
