North Oyster resident donates $50K for nerve treatment research
McNab said the treatment eased his pain immediately, and the donation will support research and student care at the clinic.
North Oyster resident Murray McNab donated $50,000 to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation to support Doctor Paul Winston's research into the Victoria Method treatment for spasticity.
McNab suffered from chronic pain after a car accident on Sept. 13, 1979, that broke his back and two femurs, leaving him reliant on a cane for decades.
On April 22, 2026, McNab underwent the Victoria Method at Victoria General Hospital, a procedure freezing nerves to reduce pain and restore movement.
The Victoria Peripheral Nerve and Spasticity Clinic treats up to 300 patients monthly, with over 75 centers worldwide now using procedures developed in Victoria.
McNab reported immediate improvement after his wife, Betty Bartleman, identified the treatment; nerves naturally regenerate at one millimeter yearly, potentially requiring follow-up care within a year.
