North Korea warns of stronger action toward South Korea over mine blast accusations
Pyongyang dismissed Seoul’s findings as a farce and said border forces would respond immediately to any further entry into its territory.
- On Tuesday, North Korea warned of an "immediate and powerful counteraction" if South Korea intrudes by "even a millimeter" into its territory, responding to Seoul's accusations that Pyongyang planted landmines injuring two soldiers.
- Seoul's military concluded that North Korea planted mines causing a Sept. 21 blast in the Demilitarized Zone that wounded two soldiers; Pyongyang dismissed the findings as a "premeditated farce."
- Since 2024, Pyongyang has deployed up to 7,000 workers to install mines and fences reinforcing border fortifications; the North has ignored dialogue proposals since designating the South a "hostile" state in 2023.
- On Monday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff released footage of mine-clearing operations south of the Military Demarcation Line , while the South demanded an apology for violating the Korean War armistice.
- Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, previously rejected Seoul's demands for an apology; both Koreas remain technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
