North Korea claims to have successfully repaired and relaunched into the water its damaged destroyer
- North Korea successfully launched a repaired 5,000-ton destroyer named Kang Kon on June 12, 2025, at the Rajin shipyard.
- The launch followed a failed attempt in May at Chongjin where the ship tipped over and was partially submerged, causing serious damage.
- Kim Jong Un ordered a full restoration before a key party meeting in late June and met with workers who helped rebuild the warship, announcing plans to build two more destroyers next year.
- KCNA reported that Kim criticized the mishap as the result of severe negligence and expressed approval of the ship’s repair, while state media announced the apprehension of four officials linked to the failed launch.
