Moment Cricket Match Abandoned After Runaway Bull Storms Field Charging at Players
The bull, estimated at 800kg, escaped from a nearby farm and charged at players before police were called and play was stopped.
On Saturday, a North East Premier League fixture at Burnopfield Cricket Club was abandoned after a juvenile bull entered the field. The match was called off despite efforts to remove the animal from the ground.
Burnopfield Cricket Club director Martin Oswell said the young bull, weighing about 800kg, escaped from a farm and traveled 1.6km to the playing field, arriving at around 15:00 BST.
Before the interruption, Burnopfield had posted a score of 226 runs against Hetton Lyons. Oswell added that the owner attempted to lure the bull away using a cow, but the effort proved unsuccessful.
Safety concerns escalated as the bull charged at players and farmers, with one person reportedly hit. Police were eventually called to the scene before the bull left "of its own accord," Oswell said.
Oswell told the Press Association that there was no chance the game could restart before the cut-off time. He described the situation as initially "quite novel" before it forced the abandonment.
